That's My World Tuesday: Local Produce

For this week, I thought I would feature local produce, although we are entering the winter months and I'm using photographs from the spring and summer. The photographs below were taken in April at the NC State Farmer's Market (top two in the collage) and at North Hills which is a shopping center near me (bottom two in the collage).

The North Carolina State Farmer's Market is in Raleigh where I live and operates year round, seven days a week, with indoor booths for crafts, local wine, cheese, seafood, plants, and fresh produce. The small market at North Hills Shopping center only operates from April to October on Saturday with tents in a central area for fresh produce and plants. There are a number of other small markets with locally grown produce in the triangle area.

The chart above shows what's in season during the year in North Carolina. The eastern part of the state has a longer growing season for many crops than the western part of the state. It's nice having the State Farmer's market in my town as farmers drive to that large market from different parts of the state.

The last shot is a day's harvest in July from my back yard garden. It doesn't get any fresher or more local than walking out into your home garden for vegetables. I'll have to wait until the summer months to be doing that again.

  2. Some of the local produce wholesalers operate out of the Farmer's Market too. Ward's Produce is probably the biggest, but there are others too. I haven't gotten out there much since they moved to their "new" location. (I guess it's not really "new" anymore is it?)

  3. I see apples and peanuts are ALWAYS in season. ;-) It's great when you can buy locally, isn't it?

  4. Your produce (3rd photo) looks so inviting, lets make salad!

I always get to buy fresh produce from markets or made-up markets than groceries...they're cheaper too. ITs really nice when you have a place near you to buy veggies and fruits. Have a nice week!

  8. This year, because we have no water at all for the garden, I only have a handfull of broad beans that have struggled through on the occasional sprinkle of rain or dew. At present I get my produce from our local 40km distant farmer's market, much like yours but smaller. Such fun to shop there with the stall holders knowing you and what you like.
Love your fresh veggies from the garden.

  9. Beautiful photos!

I'm with you about vegetable gardens; ours goes all year, and we're just finishing the last of the pumpkins. Parsnips and kale next.

Your bowl of home-grown is gorgeous!
