A crescent moon and a star below, my last outdoor sight of the old year and first of the new. A star (see note at bottom) to wish apon a moon to swing on. What more can I ask of the night sky which to me loomed as a pure delight last night. I'm posting my SkyWatch photograph a little early as it is doubling for my New Year's Day post. Happy New Year!
You can find other SkyWatch photographs from around the world a little later in the day, by clicking on SkyWatch.
NOTE - After reading the comments from some of you I realize that what I thought was a star at first glance was venus. I need to brush up on my astronomy knowledge, I'm not great about knowing what I see. I looked back through my photos and realized I should have know the "star" was a planet and below is a close up image of Venus I took. The quality isn't great but even I can tell that's not a star in the closeup.
Clever idea for the first post of the year!
ReplyDeleteAll the best in 2009!
That's lovely, I might think that was a planet than a star! Happy swf!

ReplyDeleteDid you see Jupiter and Mercury along with this last evening? I have a photo similar to yours, I wasn't able to get one with all in the same photo either. Darn it!

A beautiful way to celebrate the new year!
ReplyDeleteLovely end to 2008 and great start to 2009. Happy skywatch and happy new year.
ReplyDeleteCarver: What a neat capture of the Moon and Venus. The close-up of venus was great.
ReplyDeleteYou can always tell the difference when looking in the sky because planets don't blink. If you look at any star, because of the distance away it will flicker, but the planet is a solid reflected light from the sun.
Have a great 2009.
I think anyone can make it a mistake, it looks like a star in a way
ReplyDeletehave a great 2009!
Happy sky watching in 2009!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant and spooky. Happy 2009
ReplyDeleteSaw the same sky and wondered what the planet/star was. Tks for the Venus id.
ReplyDeleteGreat job! I tried getting that same shot after I got home from shooting the early fireworks downtown, but the trees were in the way by the time I got home and I was freezing so I didn't bother going back out to get it from another angle.
ReplyDeleteBut star or planet, the two of them are pretty spectacular when they hang out together like this. I just wish I'd gotten a better shot when Jupiter joined them last month!
