This was intended as a nesting box for the woodpeckers who tried to enlarge holes on small nesting boxes. It was a waste as those boxes were too small for them even though they drilled open bigger holes. The sharp tacks coming out of this box were intended to discourage squirrels. It didn't work. The squirrels are undeterred by the tacks and took over this box.

You really do suffer from squirrels! The tacks make an interesting pattern, and I've always loved wood in B&W.
ReplyDeleteNever thought about Woodpeckers..in a wooden nesting box..:-/
ReplyDeleteGreat contrast and textures.
ReplyDeleteI am rather glad we don't have squirrels.
Ohh... Are the cute squirrels really that pestering!! And I - who whish I had at least one in my garden - but no..
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on the squirrels. We suffer from an over abundance of them in Denver, not here in Westcliffe thank heavens!
ReplyDeleteCool photo!
Great black and white photo!
ReplyDeleteDefences were not adapted ? The enemy was ingenious ?
ReplyDeleteAt least, it was well-thought.
A great subject for B&W, that way we appreciate all the details of the woodpeckers "fortification".
They just wanted to build it by their own way.
Beautiful and interesting picture!
ReplyDeleteSquirrels don't seem to be deterred by anything, the tacks look sharp!
ReplyDeleteNo squirrels or woodpeckers here in the island. The tones and textures really do stand out in mono.
ReplyDeleteLove the texture of the wood. great in B&W

Great subject for mono, it's got quite a lot of character.
ReplyDeleteMy parents used to have a birdfeeder and my father had a running battle trying to keep the squirrels from eating all the food!
Squirrels know a good thing when they see it.
ReplyDeletethat is so bizarre looking.
ReplyDeleteLove the title! Neat shot!
ReplyDeleteBirds are not the only creature that needs a nesting box! New blog on the Hx. of the Ladybug:

It doesn't surprise me one bit that squirrels have taken over the feeder regardless of the tacks.
ReplyDeleteI know they can be pesky at times and they take over almost every bird feeder regardless of its design but…they really are amazing and amusing creatures to watch in action as they try to overcome these obstacles.
**tainted view from a squirrel lover**
Squirrels are so determined! I don't think anything stops them.
ReplyDeleteFunny story, squirrels do have a way of getting their way don't they.
