That's My World: Lath House at NCSU JC Raulston Arboretum

Last week I showed you a small part of the NC Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill, NC which is about 45 minutes from where I live. This week I'm going to show you a small part of the JC Raulston Arboretum at NCSU in Raleigh NC which is about 10 minutes from my house.

These shots are of the Lath House. The Lath House was originally called the Rare Plants House and provided shelter for young and tender plants.

The concept of this house changed and it currently houses over 700 different kinds of plants that perform best in the shade.

Fences within the house divide it into rooms. Plants are grown within raised beds. I am lucky to live in an area with major gardens associated with universities in the triangle area. On my other blog, I did a post which was a round up of three of these gardens, if you are interested.

I took these photographs in September of 2008 when it was still quite green, although the spring and summer blooms were mostly gone.

    It was a wonderful vitual walk around the Arboretum. These would make excellent monos too with all the light and shade.

    Wow, beautiful shots of a fascinating place. I'd love to learn more about shade-loving plants, as we have a lot of trees here. I might have to visit!

    Nice photos, Carver. I'm surprised the slats that make up the roof block enough light to be considered shade.Hmmm, will have to check these out next time I'm in your area.

    Like your previous shot of the garden with herbs, this place will be just as great for educational tours.
    My mind has been filled with my daughter's science homework of flowering and non-flowering plants etc...*lol*
