The cardinal was selected as the State Bird of North Carolina in 1943. Below is a male cardinal I photographed in one of my trees.
Cardinals are one of the most common birds to be found in North Carolina yards and are year round residents here. Below is a female cardinal I photographed in one of my trees.

To visit other parts of the world, please go to the home of that's my world Tuesday.
Wow! You captured both in your lens. These are truly lovely shots!
ReplyDeleteIt's so nice to see these critters bringing color into the still almost colorless woods! :)
ReplyDeleteCheers, Klaus
We have no cardinals in New Mexico (at least of which I am aware). Common? How lucky you are to see that bright flash of red!
ReplyDeleteIt's a birdy My World today;) If I remember correctly the cardinal is also a state bird of Virginia.
ReplyDeleteHow beautiful. I have a bird post this week too.
ReplyDeleteI do love cardinals! And you got such terrific shots! And their beautiful color offers hope for spring!! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThose birds are beautiful, i wish we had them around here.
ReplyDeletePardon my ignorance, but are red ones only male?
ReplyDeleteOh I wish I could see one of these in person. I am not a birder so I guess I will not find one here in Cali?
Have a great week, Carver.

Welcome home, scarlet wonders.
ReplyDeleteKoala's right. It's the state bird of Virginia too. And it's a delight to see red in a backyard whitewashed in snow. I hadn't been able to catch a female cardinal. So great to see both in your post today. Happy spring!
ReplyDeleteNice shots of cardinals. I still dram of capturing them with my camera. ;-)
ReplyDeleteCardinals are such beautiful birds! A wonderful state bird for sure!

The male Cardinal is such a striking bird when in mating plumage. Nice post and shots.
ReplyDeleteHey Carver: Loved the water tower. Learning a lot about our fair state from you. All these theme days seem to result in a lot of traffic. So far, we're just doing the city daily photo first-of-the-month themes and skywatch friday. Suggestions for other memes/themes?

To me this is such an exotic bird, like the bluejay which are no are common to you too. So envious they are so pretty.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful colour, well photographed.
ReplyDeleteI love both of these photos. Nice job!
ReplyDeleteSpooky! I just yesterday caught a couple of male cardinals in my trees. One of them was actually in a dogwood, which was two state symbols for the price of one.
ReplyDeletethey may be the most common birds around here, but you couldn't prove it by my yard. Going by that, you'd think the state bird was the crow!
Beautiful shots.....
ReplyDeleteGood pics of good-looking creatures.
ReplyDeleteThe cardinals are so vivid. I have two pairs that frequent my feeders. The look like brilliant Christmas ornaments when perched on the scrub oak.
ReplyDeleteI thought cardinal was the state bird of IL, where I grew up.
Carver: Very cool shots of the Cardinal, it is the most prolific state bird.
ReplyDeleteWhat's the deal with the male birds (of any species) being the showiest? I think the females got cheated!!
ReplyDeleteenjoyed the shots of the beautiful cardinals.
ReplyDeletei need to find myself a good perch to sit on so i can start capturing birds that visit my yard. one day i will get to it ^..^
