That's My World - My wild and crazy garden

I am feeling very uninspired so I decided for this week's My World post, I would step into my back garden today and shoot a section that is blooming wildly. There used to be a path in the portion I photographed, but at this point I have to crawl under rose boughs that have gone crazy. There is almost no space left between the roses and the ornamental bushes. If I ever disappear I've probably been eaten up by my riotous garden.

My World Tuesday: Watching the Fishing (NC - US)

I haven't fished since I was a child but I photographed human and bird fishing at Shelley Lake which is near my house in the triangle area of North Carolina (U.S.).

There are largemouth bass, catfish, sunfish, bream, crappie and carp in the lake according to the city website.

I enjoy watching birds fish and occasionally see them with a fish in their mouth but I've never caught a shot like that.

That's My World: Downtown last week in Raleigh, NC

All of the shots in this post were taken last week downtown in Raleigh, NC. I live in North Raleigh and don't get downtown as much as I used to so it's fun to photograph that part of my town when I'm there. You can click inside the shots to enlarge them.
The first shot is taken facing the Capitol on Fayetteville Street and the second shot is taken walking towards the other end of the street and facing Memorial Auditorium.
I like the hodgepodge of building downtown although I'm not sure how I feel about the identity crisis with Fayetteville Street. It was originally a street which was turned into a pedestrian mall and then not too long ago the pedestrian mall was ripped up and it has gone back to being a street.
You can read about the history of the street on this city link but in short the street has been part of the city since 1792 when the city was designed. In 1977 the street was turned into a pedestrian mall and then in 2006 the mall was ripped up and it was turned back into a street for cars. The Federal Building above has always been among my favorite buildings on Fayetteville Street. It was the first federal government project in the south following the civil war.
All of the shots in this downtown post were taken on Fayetteville Street except for the very last one. I wish I had been into photography more during the time where it had a pedestrian mall, for comparison, but I wasn't.
The last shot was taken on another street downtown and I'm including it because I liked the reflection I caught in the building.

That's My World: NC Art Museum Park - The Wind Marchine

I took the photograph below on Sunday in the NC Art Museum's Park. The work in the center is titled The Wind Machine (created in 2002) and is by Vollis Simpson (born 1919). There is a PBS story about Vollis Simpson and his whirligigs online if you click here. The smokestack on the right operated the Polk Youth Prison's power plant and is what remains of that prison whose site is now part of the Museum Art Park. My post below shows the smokestack in a monochrome shot from a different angle.

Update - Several of the comments have mentioned the chimney so I thought I'd add this information about it. Until 2000 this circular brick tower served as a smokestack for the power plant of the former Polk Youth Center prison. Most of the prison buildings have been torn down, but the Museum kept the tower because it is like a monument on the horizon.

SkyWatch Friday: Japanese Maple looked like spring fire on Monday

For a few weeks in the spring, my neighbor's Japanese maple looks like fire to me. I liked the way it looked on Monday against the cloudy sky.
