The statue of Washington Duke, which was commissioned after his death in 1905, by the sculptor Edward Virginius Valentine makes me laugh. There is something about a large bronze statue with the subject seated in an armchair which cracks me up. This statue is located on the East Campus of Duke University in Durham, NC.

One of the better known landmarks on the Duke Campus is Duke Chapel which was built between 1930 and 1932. I took this shot from Duke Gardens which is at least a mile from the chapel but gave me a good vantage point to shoot it.

You can see the steeples of Duke Chapel from a good portion of the campus. I was going to get a tooth pulled by a Duke oral surgeon, when I noticed all four steeples of Duke Chapel which you can see on the left hand part of the shot above. The shot below are of the doors into Baker House where I had the oral surgery.

What great shots, Carver! Have to admit, the statue cracked me up, too! Looks like a lovely place of learning and I have a thing about college campuses anyway. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI just recently took pictures of Princeton and I'm amazed by the beauty of these old schools.
ReplyDeleteDuke looks really nice.
Amazing! These shots give a great feel of the place.
ReplyDeleteInteresting architecture on campus. It is kind of strange and humorous to have that bronze armchair statue outside surrounded by greenery.
ReplyDeleteThat area is filled with such interesting architecture! I agree - a statue in an armchair is a little odd. ;)
ReplyDeleteLove shots and buildings.
ReplyDeleteLove the great architecture of the Chapel. I was laughing too when I saw the sculpture. I love old buildings and campuses.
ReplyDeleteThanks for showing me Duke. My friend had worked there for a long time and I didn't get a chance to visit her before she moved to another state. There went my chance to see Duke :)
ReplyDeleteThanks again. Enjoy the work week.
Beautiful pictures I love the Baker House but wouldn't like to go in there Don't like dentists et al
ReplyDeleteDuke University----a rival of the University of Virginia but I love your photos anyway. I have seen the chapel but not the chair. I agree that chair looks comical.
ReplyDeleteI like the Baker house doors, something pretty to look at before getting your tooth pull...
ReplyDeleteThis looks such a well maintained campus. I do like the witty slant in the grounds with the sculpture. Learning afterall should be fun. The image with the flags and silhouetted bare branches is very atmospheric.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, crisp shots. I am having trouble making my wildlife stay put in My Muskoka!
ReplyDeleteHaven't been there but it looks like a wonderful old school campus!
ReplyDeleteMust have run out of horses to pose for the statues ... :)
ReplyDeleteI have friends at Duke, so I know the medical and dental care is more up to date than the outside of the building. That quasi-medieval architecture could make you think twice about any kind of surgery - but I hope yours was successful.
Beautiful, I loved the architecture of those buildings. Marvelous.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful shots. I love the steeples, and the last photo looks like England. I hope your oral surgery went well.
ReplyDeleteYou're right - a big statue of someone sitting down IS funny. The chapel is beautiful - lovely, solid buildings.
ReplyDeleteWell, it is not everyone who gets to sit in the garden in an armchair fo the rest of his unnatural life. Nice Neo-Gothic architecture too.
ReplyDeleteCarver: What neat photos of a great basketball school.
ReplyDeleteThat is a gorgeous place.
ReplyDeleteyou are in a very nice area with nice places to see
ReplyDeletethat monument seems odd for me too, it looks too huge there
the chapel is great, love the architecture so as the houses and buildings around
How fun to see these photos. A friend's daughter worked at Duke University for a while and I've never been on the campus. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHugs and blessings,
