That's My World Tuesday: Road Trip to Beford, VA and surrounding mountains from a few years ago
For this week of That's My World, I'm taking you on another road trip to the mountains.
This time it's Virginia (last week was the North Carolina mountains). This part of the Virginia mountains is close to the NC border much like last week the NC mountain trip was near the VA border.
While we were in Bedford, VA we drove to a place where we could go on a hike at part of the Appalachian trail and then another day went to the James River Park.
I had a lot of photographs I hadn't used yet from the town, park and hikes.
This post is rather a jumbled mix of shots from the road, trails, park, and town. The shot below is one I recall wanting to use before but I didn't like the wires or the obstruction across the tracks. I think it's a branch that was near where I was shooting and it ended up looking like it's across the tracks although it's not. Rather than deal with trying to work with the shot on my computer to get rid of the obstructions, I'm just posting it blemishes and all.
I find looking back through my photographs that I usually post a few shots from a trip and then forget about them, although frequently intend to go back and post more later.
Especially when it's an autumn trip I tend to focus on shots that show off the fall foliage but forget about other shots.
Even shots like the one above that show off the fall foliage, but more as a jumble, tend to be overlooked when I pick out shots to post.

Monochrome Weekend: bench, clock and reflections
Note- I just saw that this theme has a new name - The Weekend in Black and White which Dragonstar is graciously keeping going. Thank you to Dragonstar.
I didn't have time to park and compose the shot as I was running errands. This caught my eye in a shopping area and no one was behind me so I rolled down my window and took a quick snap. I think it turned out o.k. but is obviously taken on the run.

SkyWatch Friday: Mixed shots
I looked out of my bedroom window at sundown, and was struck by the bands of blue across the sky.
The next shot was taken when I was running errands and I thought the sky had an interesting pattern.
The shot below was taken out of the same window as the first shot, at about the same time, but a few days later.
The last shot was taken in my neighborhood and I thought the patchy sky was interesting.

That's My World Tuesday: Grassy Creek, NC
Grassy Creek, North Carolina is in Ashe County near the NC and Virginia border (northern NC mountains).
If you've never heard of Grassy Creek, you aren't alone. This unincorporated township was established around 1788 and only had a population of 511 in the 2000 census.
The shots in this post are ones from my digital photo archives that I haven't posted on my blog yet. Some of these shots are in Grassy Creek and some were when we were driving around trying to find it.
I've felt like a change of scenery on my blog so I've been looking back through past trip shots.
My mother's grandparents had a farm in Grassy Creek and I have many fond memories of visiting them when I was a child. I was named after their son, Carver, who died when my mother was a baby. I am a woman and was given Carver as my middle name which is what everyone called me. When I got married I dropped my first name (Jane) and Carver became my legal first name.

Monochrome Weekend: Highway near Bedford, Virginia
I've been looking through my archives lately for photographs I didn't use yet but like. I took this shot on a trip to the Virginia mountains a few years ago. The monochrome version is my photograph for Monochrome weekend.
I think I like it better in monochrome than in color except in monochrome the highway worker doesn't stand out as well as he does in full color. In the color version below, if you look at the far left on the barn, you should be able to make out a red shirt of someone working on the barn. I'm including the color version below for comparison.

That's My World Tuesday: American Robin
I guess I should have known this, but before I started blogging I didn't realize that the American Robin (Turdus migratorius) is a totally different bird from the European Robin (Erithacus rubecula). After reading about different types of robins, one article I found suggested that the American Robin was named robin by colonial settlers because its breast color resembled the smaller European Robin. 
The shots in this post are of an American Robin that posed for me this Sunday. Here's a link to information about the European Robin which is much smaller and quite different from the American Robin. For more information about the American Robin you can go to this link. While I'm at it, as those of you in Australia know but I'm just finding out, there is a Australasian Robin of the family Petroicidae. You can read about the Australasian Robin at this link. Were it not for blogging I probably never would have known that different types of birds have the common name robin depending on where you are. I often find that blogging sets me off on research into areas I hadn't previously thought about.

Monochrome Weekend: Blowing Rock, NC four years ago
I shot this in color in October of 2006 but never posted it because the color wasn't satisfactory. Looking for a monochrome shot this week I thought I'd try changing this one from color to gray scale. I think it works better this way than it did in color.
