D is for Durham, NC, U.S. and also for Durham in England. As you can see below Durham , NC, U.S. is 4119 miles away from Durham, England.
The Durham Bulls is a baseball club in Durham NC which was first formed in 1902. Downtown Durham is filled with Bulls in their honor (hopefully not too much bull ---- is spilling out onto the streets).
The movie Bull Durham was filmed in part in Durham and the game scenes were shot in the old Durham Athletic Park.
The original Durham Athletic Park burned to the ground in 1939 and was rebuilt.
The old DAP is the one I'm using for this post although the Durham Bulls have a new DAP which was completed in 1995 and was expanded to 10,000 seat capacity in 1998.
I think the old Durham ballpark has more romance to it although the new stadium allows for more spectators.
The Durham Bulls bike racks scattered around downtown Durham, as well as the baseball inspired art, are fun.
A Durham Bulls baseball obsession is certainly better than the days when big tobacco dominated.
In the late 1980s American Tobacco left Durham and by 2004 the Historic American Tobacco District included mixed shops, businesses, restaurants, Durham Bulls Baseball, music on the lawn, Durham Performing Arts Center, and WUNC Radio Station. The area continues to undergo renovation and will include residential units.

You could do an entire feature on the old Durham Athletic Park. The DAP (as opposed to the newer Durham Bulls Athletic Park, or "Dee-BAP" as it's commonly known) also got some major upgrades courtesy of the movie studio that made Bull Durham. Including the eye-flashing smoke-snorting bull over the right center field fence featured in the movie. Having spent several summer evenings in the DAP before the movie, I can tell ya the facelift was significant.

Yes..the sign post reminded me of 'Mash' too...we just tore down our old historic stadium and the newer one has been used for a while..but I have lots of memories from the old one..

ReplyDeleteThere seems a rush to build new sports grounds but they never have the atmosphere of the old ones. Maybe they need to soak up lots of hope, happiness and despair before they recreate the past.

ReplyDeleteI'm always fascinated with the baseball teams and stadiums around the United States that aren't "big league" teams. The seats are closer to the field. The stadium is family friendly and the prices are right.

ReplyDeleteThough I've never been to Durham NC, I certainly wouldn't mind a visit there now after your photographic tour. I agree that baseball is much more attractive than tobacco, though in a historical context, tobacco and the culture around the growing of it is quite interesting. Now you have a 'thing' for small towns that ooze community! I like the sound and the feel of Durham NC. And I like your photos. Not sure I would want to see bull heads everywhere but sure beats the other end of a bull.

ReplyDeleteDurham UK is not far from where we live. I love to spot the Cathedral spire as we pass by on the motorway usually heading for Newcastle. I attended college there so I have naby student memories too. Now I know there is another Durham - we learn so much each Wednesday don't we?
