ABC Wednesday: Z is for Zambia Zimbabwe Zanzibar

I was trying to think of something for Z when the Doctors Without Borders Map I have on a wall jumped out at me with Zambia, Zimbabwe and Zanzibar.

I keep that map up because I am constantly confused when looking at the globe that used to be my parents which has the names that countries were designated by on maps when I was growing up.

As you can see on the globe above Zimbabwe was designated as Rhodesia on the globe I used growing up. The U.S.S.R. was also designated on that globe as you may be able to make out below. My daughter wasn't confused because she had a very large beach ball size inflatable globe when she was growing up but I don't know what happened to that so I keep the maps that Doctors without Borders sends me tacked up on a wall.

I should throw away the old globe because it isn't fancy or anything and it's way out of date. I do like being able to see the world from the perspective of a globe rather than a flat map and I can always locate somewhere on new maps and then put it in perspective by looking at the area on the globe. 1. I absolutely relate to this post. When I was very little, we had a very large map of the world on our wall, when I grew up, and had children, we had a number of globes but now, when I am at the other side of life, so many countries have changed their names, I find it hard to keep up.

  4. I'm old enough to remember Northern and Southern Rhodesia. Zanzibar hadn't merged with Tanganyika to create Tanzania.

Burt you should keep the globe; a bit of history. Whatever happened to Czechoslovakia?

  6. It is wonderous looking at maps and globes and noticing how time has changed them.

  7. Great photos. I love, love, love old globes too but I ended up getting rid of mine for the very reasons you've explained.

  9. I agree with Sylvia. Don't throw out the globe, it is a treasure, even if it isn't fancy.
I enjoyed your post today very much.

  12. Maps and globes become outdated even as they are produced.

Your's reminded of my daughter who has just returned from a trip that took her from Cape Town to Windhoek, then through Botswana to Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique.

  13. Wonderful to still have a globe - mine have all disappeared. Seems like maps and names change with greater and greater speed. Terrific post!

  14. Oh don't throw away your old, out of date globe - I am one who collects them and I know from asking at various antique shops that these older ones with the former names are collectible. Your post is similar to mine, and I got confused in looking up the information for the write-up!

  15. I understand your love of the globe, carver - somehow it seems to make the world more real, even if the names are out of date!!!

  16. What a great idea! I can never keep up with the countries that divide or merge or change names in both Europe and Africa, especially.
