ABC Wednesday: D is for Daffodil

Definitely the earliest I've seen daffodils bloom in my neck of the woods.

Daffodils in my part of North Carolina frequently court disaster with a few early blooms in late February but early February is without a doubt reckless.

There are only a few blooming in my yard (the ones above are from neighbors and the ones below are all from my yard) but even the buds are too far along for daffodils this time of the year.

The shots above were all taken of daffodils this February 2012. The shots below are from my archives and they were taken of the daffodils in my yard in March of 2009.

Looking back through my archives we had at least a little snow in March for several years in a row but 2009 was the only one that was deep enough to weigh down the daffodils to the point they didn't bound back up. Even when the snow melted the daffodils were droopy that year.

This has been such a mild winter that the daffodils may end up being alright even though they are so far ahead of schedule.

    Lovely pictures - daffodils certainly are the heralds of Spring - we only have a few green spikes pushing through as yet - the snowdrops are out though - have a good week - Jane UK

    Your daffy-dills are far more advanced than the ones in my yard.:) Right now we have little green spikes forming in the garden and snowdrops. Hope none of our flowers are surprised by a late snowfall. A cluster of daffodils sitting in the snow does make for a pretty picture, though.

    I LOVE daffodils! It means spring is just around the corner. Our problem, though is that our winter has been so mild, with sprinklings of winter that the trees and flowers, I fear, are in real trouble this year. I can't imagine it remaining mild... Still lovely photos and daffodils just make me smile. Thanks.

    Now that's really crazy. Daffodils already!
    We aare having such a mild winter here in Northern California too.
    Some of the flowering plum trees are already in full bloom.

    Once we had the same. My tulips were in full bloom in March, and then came the snow. It was however strange that some flowers survived.

    It's difficult to predict weather this year - or perhaps any year. Our daffodils are just poking shoots above ground, whatever that portends here on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state. Your pictures are lovely!

    I love daffodils. We can't grow them because the rabbits get them. So I buy a bunch almost every week from the store. They only cost about $3.00. Then I put them out on the picnic table where they can be see all the time from the kitchen/dining area. If I choose the ones that are still in bud, they often last almost two weeks.

    So bright and yet so cold. That's exactly what I thought when I saw these lovely daffodils; and the same thing I felt while out for a morning walk in East Yorkshire. They were daffodils too and it was also spring. Your flowers gave me nostalgia today.

    Oh my gosh Carver, they are just beautiful but yeah, too early!! Daffys are my favorite flower and, that is the one thing I don't like about Florida, we don't get any of the "real" Spring flowers. (Yeah, no winter, no spring!).

    (In Oregon, sometimes a hard rainstorm would knock their little heads off just as they bloomed... I hated that!)

    I am reminded of the poem "Daffodils"(1804) by William Wordsworth.I am reproducing the first stanza which is lovely:

    Our daffodils aren't coming up yet (atleast I haven't noticed them), but we are having a very mild winter, too. Neat comparison to last year!
