ABC Wednesday: L is for Lock

The first lock I'm going to show you is the Battery Creek Lock downstream from the James River, off the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Virginia mountains near the NC border.

The next shot is of the James River upstream from the Lock.

Rather than type up the information about the lock, I am using a photo of one of the signs.

Following are some shot I took in the North Carolina mountains of another lock.

This lock is for water from Bass Lake at the Moses Cone Estate in Blowing Rock, NC.

The shots of the lock at James River were taken in October of 2007 and the ones of Bass Lake's Lock were taken in August of 2009. Click for the home of ABC Wednesday.

    This is an interesting take on locks. They are not the kind one thinks of initially… but locking the flow of water couldn’t be more important. What beautiful settings for both these mechanisms!

    Beautiful river. I love locks -- these remind me of the canal ones we saw in England. Instead of the ones we go through on our River here in Florida, which look very industrial compared to yours.

    I find locks fascinating; I saw one last year in Peterborough, Ontario.

    Love that part of the country too; I was in Virginia a few years back.

    I've never done a little trip like this where you have to open and close a lock, but I know people in England who do it all the time. I think it would be so peaceful to float down a beautiful river like these!

    I've through, and also visited a lot of locks in my time, but the largest was on the Panama Canal. That was quite an experience.
