The Weekend in Black and White: Mast General Store Valle Crusis, NC

I took this shot of the rear entrance to the Mast General Store in Valle Crusis, NC a few years ago. The front is painted white but I like the unpainted rear. This is the original store which has been in operation since 1883. Now there are additional Mast General stores including one in Boone, NC; Asheville, NC and several other towns. There are 9 in all and each one is in a building dating from 1883 to 1945.

  1. Agree, I think the unpainted is probably much the better side. Funny how 'old' can be a relative term, this would be almost new in UK terms.

  3. I do not know why, but houses like this always gives me the creeps. The windows looks like evil eyes looking down on med. Too many scary movies maybe ;-)
    Love the photo though.

  8. Ruby's put it just right - classic beauty. Much more attractive unpainted, and a lovely shot.

  13. I have been to the one in Asheville many times. IO lived there for 18 years. Am so glad you showed the back of the building. I, too, like seeing the natural old wood. genie
