High stepping heron hunched over.
Herons look so much smaller when their heads are lower on curved necks.
I heard the heron hiss before I saw it where it was partially hidden.
This heron was hunting fish from a fish feeding station intended to help encourage a larger fish population.
Have you ever heard the saying: if you feed the birds you feed the birds. The meaning being that by feeding prey birds you encourage predators like hawks. This is a case of: If you feed the fish you feed the herons.
These shots of the great blue herons are a mix of ones I've taken at several lakes over the past few years.

beautiful bird shots!
ReplyDeleteDepending on the positions of the neck, this bird takes on many personas. Proud, hunched or lurching forward towards the next meal, it is a magnificent sight in the wild!
ReplyDeleteGreat collection of great blues! (I forgot this was an "H" post ;>)....)
ReplyDeleteAll herons look like entirely different birds when they have their necks extended instead of shortened (or whatever that words is I want).
