SkyWatch Friday: The sun sets on November and rises on December

I thought I'd begin this sky watch post with some shots I took on the last day of November.

I've been seeing a lot of dancing clouds lately.

When the sun was going down there was a nice mix of of clouds, colors and contrails.

I can see more of the sky now the the trees have shed their leaves.

I took a lot of sunset shots on the last day of November.

On the first day of December I caught the sunrise.

The clouds were brushed with pink.

Before the sunrise I also caught the moon before it set.
skywatcDSCN9179
I like to catch the moon in the morning.
skywatchDSCN9178
It was a particularly good day for it.

A few days later I captured the morning moon against the blue sky after the sun was completely up.

I got a lot of dancing clouds this week.
skywatchDSCN9333
Just a week ago I wouldn't have been able to see as many of the cloud dancers because the oaks didn't give up their leaves until this week.
skywatchDSCN9340
It's also fun to find them in the part of the sky not covered by branches.
skywatchDSCN9371
I have so many trees that I usually have to crop them out to get the dancing clouds against a completely empty sky.

This is another week where I had trouble narrowing down the number of shots I used.

Next are some shot I took during sunset a few days ago.
skywatchDSCN9397
While the sun went down I watched the jets disappear as the crossed the sky.
skywatchDSCN9407
I see a lot of planes and helicopters but am usually not fast enough to zoom in and get them in my shots.
skywatchDSCN9413
Sometimes the helicopters are so low and close I hear them when I'm inside my house.
skywatchDSCN9417
The jets are quite high by the time they fly by my house so I don't hear them which is just as well.
skywatchDSCN9421
I don't think I'd like to live too close to an airport.

The last shots were taken Tuesday.

They again demonstrate how much more I can see with bare winter trees than if they had their large leaves still on.

  2. An amazing series of Sky shots, every one of them really beautiful! I remember visiting a friend years ago when they lived near a navy air field. Trying to have a conversation on the porch when the jets were practicing their landings was a real challenge.
