ABC Wednesday: W is for Weigela

I planted a Weigela florida bush around 1990 and it did well for about 20 years.

Unfortunately my Weigela was wounded and died several years ago.

The only trace I have now of my wonderful Weigela is old photographs I took.

Weigela is a deciduous shrub and use to have some of my earliest spring flowers.

The new leaves are a wine color.

The leaves get more green in them as they mature.

  4. very pretty. i bought one from a catalog 3 years ago i think so we have been enjoying the blooms for 2 years now, but ours is not this deep color. ours is more whitish with pink splashes/trims, i cannot explain it fully, but i'll try to photograph it when it blooms again. it's in a pot right now. do you suggest transfering to ground?

  5. Lovely bush, that is the beauty of photographs. Ours is just coming into flower now. Had two, one died but one thrived, ah the mystery of gardening.

  6. I love Weigela but don't have one here in the town garden, - however there are two at our house in the country, one a lovely wine colour and the either with variegated leaves and pink and white flowers. Your photos are beautiful.

  11. Very pretty shrub. I had a rose bush that I loved and it also was injured and died. I still miss it so I know how you feel about your weigela.

  17. I'm sorry you no longer have your weigela. Will you get another? I planted mine 3 years ago and had a few blossoms this Spring. I hope mine becomes as beautiful as the photos of yours!
