I live in a residential neighborhood and didn't know there were any foxes in the area.
I was quite surprised that 2 adult and 2 much smaller younger foxes came to my deck for a drink of water and to eat berries off the vines.
After that we drove about an hour east to Wilber's Barbecue for lunch.
I would have been much less surprised if there were foxes in the rural areas we drove through than to have them arrive on my deck like they did.
Although I imagine the farmers wouldn't have been as pleased to see the foxes as I was.
This was my first time eating at Wilber's barbecue. We usually stop at a place a little further southeast on the way to the beach for barbecue.
Bill had read an article about an older man who has been the cook at Wilber's for a long time and was going to retire soon.
He suggested we drive to Goldsboro to eat there Saturday before the cook retired.
It was definitely a busy place between the vegetable stand out front and the restaurant inside.
The cook uses a slow cooking method out back over oak wood embers.
In the back of the parking lot there was a large cornfield.
At the far end of the parking lot there was a large flower stand.
my goodness that was a big surprise to find foxes in your deck. i hope they didn't happen upon the kitties that visit your deck too.
ReplyDeleteA little too close for comfort … but the fox family is photogenic. Looks like all living creatures are looking for a meal. So nice that you had that very special one from the soon-to-be-retired cook. :)

ReplyDeleteFoxes have adapted very well to human habitation, as have raccoons. I think it woes back to the hays when people kept poultry and it was easy pickings for them. Great to wake up to a whole family visiting.

We have too many urban foxes living in our area. Night after night I am kept awake by their screaming.They follow the railway lines into the city and have found so much easy food to feed on they have now made their home here. I doubt they would survive moving back to the countryside.
