SkyWatch Friday: End of September and beginning of October

I caught a morning moon on September 26, 2013.

I selected the photographs for this post beginning with September 26 and continuing through the first day of October, 2013.

This is a good time of the year for sky watching.

The sky below is what I call a quilted comforter sky.

The clouds are like cotton candy below.
skywatchDSCN2325
I love the afternoon light this time of the year.
skywatchDSCN2346
The afternoon light gives the sky a satin glow.
skywatchDSCN2355
We've had some days with a vivid blue sky serving as a backdrop to large clouds.

This is another week where I had trouble narrowing down the shots to use.
skywatchDSCN2443
I caught a pretty sunset one afternoon.
skywatchDSCN2506
We haven't had too many colorful sunsets lately but usually I catch at least one or too a week.
skywatchDSCN2510
I like the mix of textures in the cloud below.
skywatchDSCN2547
The clouds below almost look like a big head on a skinny neck attached to a large body.
skywatchDSCN2548
We've had quite a few cotton ball clouds.
skywatchDSCN2557
One of these days I'm going to learn the scientific names for clouds.
skywatchDSCN2562
I know a few names for clouds but can't usually recognize which are which.
skywatchDSCN2567
I tend to make up names for clouds rather than learn their real names.
skywatchDSCN2582
September was getting seasonably cool.
skywatchDSCN2589
It is strange that the last day of September and beginning of October changed back to almost summer weather.
skywatchDSCN2592
I don't mind some ups and downs with the temperatures but I'm looking forward to the first frost of the season.
skywatchDSCN2629
I think our average first frost is usually sometime between mid and late October.
skywatchDSCN2641
Last winter was unusually mild.
skywatchDSCN2642
We had a few small snows but it never got very cold.
skywatchDSCN2682
I hope we will have a colder winter this year but I know enough to be careful what I wish for.

  6. Morning moons are magic. And you have the best variety of clouds. I've never seen those cotton comforter ones anywhere but here I don't think.

I always think I'll go read up on what weather makes the different clouds, but I never do. I prefer to think they are just magical gifts, like the moon.

  17. I'm with you, Carver: incredibly gorgeous skies this time of year (and getting better every day), wonderful clouds, and can't wait until the first frost. October brought back temps in the high 80s! But the humidity is significantly lower, so it's still delightful. Have a great weekend.
