That's My World: Lath House at NCSU JC Raulston Arboretum

Last week I showed you a small part of the NC Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill, NC which is about 45 minutes from where I live. This week I'm going to show you a small part of the JC Raulston Arboretum at NCSU in Raleigh NC which is about 10 minutes from my house.

These shots are of the Lath House. The Lath House was originally called the Rare Plants House and provided shelter for young and tender plants.

The concept of this house changed and it currently houses over 700 different kinds of plants that perform best in the shade.

Fences within the house divide it into rooms. Plants are grown within raised beds. I am lucky to live in an area with major gardens associated with universities in the triangle area. On my other blog, I did a post which was a round up of three of these gardens, if you are interested.

I took these photographs in September of 2008 when it was still quite green, although the spring and summer blooms were mostly gone.

That's My World: Herb Garden in the North Carolina Botanical Garden

The NC Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill, NC has an herb garden I enjoy visiting.



The cat above has been around the past three times I've visited the NC botanical garden and he tends to hang out in or near the herb garden.



The herb garden is divided into sections with all different types of herbs including medicinal and poisonous plants as well as culinary and industrial herbs. There is also a Child's Garden with activities for the young ones.



These photographs were taken last year during the growing season when everything was still green.

Monochrome Monday: Animal House

This was intended as a nesting box for the woodpeckers who tried to enlarge holes on small nesting boxes. It was a waste as those boxes were too small for them even though they drilled open bigger holes. The sharp tacks coming out of this box were intended to discourage squirrels. It didn't work. The squirrels are undeterred by the tacks and took over this box.

That's My World: Continuing Growth or Not

The continuing growth in the triangle area of NC where I live gets to me sometimes. When I think they can't develop an over developed area any more, down goes another strip of trees and more building. However, my reaction at this point is mixed because like many other places unemployment is starting to rise. Therefore as much as I hate the loss of green areas, I'm also aware that with no development even more jobs will be lost.



I do hope we don't lose all the green and natural areas that make my world worth living in. There has to be some kind of balance. Otherwise, people won't want to live here and that will mean less jobs too. I guess it's sort of a catch 22 situation.

I decided to show you more of the house which I'd love to fix up (in my dreams), and which I showed the front porch detail on for last weeks Monochrome shot. I took these shots at the end of the summer of 2008 when the leaves were still on the trees.

That's My World Tuesday: NC Museum of History

On the left side of the screen is the NC Museum of History. It is located on Bicentennial Plaza in Raleigh, NC across the walkway from the NC Museum of Science which is on the right hand side of the screen. I featured the science museum in last week's My World post. These shots were taken at the end of the summer which is why the trees are leafed out. This time of year they are all bare. The dome with the flag is the NC Capitol Building which is across the street from the museums.

The shot above shows the front door of the history museum. The museum has programs for children, permanent and temporary exhibits for all ages. A few of the current exhibits include: Everyday Artistry (featuring quilts, tools and other objects from rural NC); A Thousand Words: Photographs by Vietnam Veterans (taken by NC veterans); Bearing Witness: Civil Rights Photographs of Alexander Rivera (taken by a NC native during the civil rights era); Community and Culture: North Carolina Indians Past and Present. Those are just a few of the exhibits that caught my eye on the current exhibit list. I haven't been inside the museum in a number of years so I will have to go check out some of the newer exhibits soon.
