Last week I showed you a small part of the NC Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill, NC which is about 45 minutes from where I live. This week I'm going to show you a small part of the JC Raulston Arboretum at NCSU in Raleigh NC which is about 10 minutes from my house.
These shots are of the Lath House. The Lath House was originally called the Rare Plants House and provided shelter for young and tender plants.
The concept of this house changed and it currently houses over 700 different kinds of plants that perform best in the shade.
Fences within the house divide it into rooms. Plants are grown within raised beds. I am lucky to live in an area with major gardens associated with universities in the triangle area. On my other blog, I did a post which was a round up of three of these gardens, if you are interested.
I took these photographs in September of 2008 when it was still quite green, although the spring and summer blooms were mostly gone.

Absolutely gorgeous shots! I would love to visit there! Thanks for sharing!
Carver: That looks like a very nice place to visit.
What lovely play of light and shade the laths create. Beautiful post and you are so lucky, as you say, to have these gardens so close to you.
What a lovely place to spend a few hours visiting with plants. Thanks for the tour.
It was a wonderful vitual walk around the Arboretum. These would make excellent monos too with all the light and shade.
Hi Carver, great shots of a beautiful place, really like the patterns in your shots.
Wow, beautiful shots of a fascinating place. I'd love to learn more about shade-loving plants, as we have a lot of trees here. I might have to visit!
Nice photos, Carver. I'm surprised the slats that make up the roof block enough light to be considered shade.Hmmm, will have to check these out next time I'm in your area.
Must be great to see the collection of rare plants in a place. You are lucky indeed!
Ah, this makes me long for spring. Looks like a beautiful place to visit.
That's an interesting construction.
Like your previous shot of the garden with herbs, this place will be just as great for educational tours.
My mind has been filled with my daughter's science homework of flowering and non-flowering plants etc...*lol*
This Lath House is very decorative. It must be wonderful to go from "room" to "room".Thanks for sharing. I love to see all those new places.
This is a fabulous place, is it very humid in there? Would love to visit that.
Nice arboretum, great pictures.
These photos are a great study of lines. Beautiful place!
I need a Lath House in my garden to provide some shade! Love all the greenery.
I love these rooms filled with plants and the slatted ceilings that provide light and shade at the same time... Thanks Carver! :)
I'd love to visit that place, it's so beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing these pictures.
And thank you for visiting my blog :)
I SO need to get out there when the weather breaks! Haven't been in ages.
Thanks for reminding me.
Lovely cool place to go from a walk on a hot summer's day.
Lovely light and shadow display.
Amazing! Who is taking care of all these wonderful plants? He got a lot of work to do.
