Nature Notes and Our World Tuesday: Sun out on Sunday

We had a wet chilly week but the sun came out on Sunday.

natworldDSCN0019

One day the highs were a degree or two above freezing with pouring down rain.

Except for driving issues, I'd rather have snow than a cold rain.

Nature Notes and Our World Tuesday: the week past

This post includes photographs I took between January 12 and January 18.

natworldDSCN9931

It was a mixed week with mostly overcast skies, rain, and freezing rain but the sun did come out from time to time.

natworldDSCN9915

I managed to get some ice shots Wednesday morning while giving my car a chance to defrost and for the tow trucks to move the early accidents out of the way.

natworldDSCN9920

Part of the creek feeding into Shelley Lake have frozen but the lake itself hasn't frozen yet.

natworldDSCN9955

The lake doesn't freeze every winter but the past 4 or 5 years it has frozen over for at least part of the winter.

natworldDSCN9966

I know the water birds like it better when it doesn't freeze.

natworldDSCN9972

The lake shots are ones I took on Saturday.

natworldDSCN9973

Saturday was sunny with warmer temperatures but the wind made it feel much colder than it was.

natworldDSCN9977

This week is supposed to be mild but we have a chance of snow over the weekend (January 23).

natworldDSCN9979

I would enjoy a pretty weekend snow but don't want to deal with the commute from Raleigh to Durham in the snow.

natworldDSCN9986

There are too many nuts that drive the route I go to work on.

natworldDSCN9988

Even in perfect conditions they weave in and out to gain an inch and usually lose their gains even if they don't cause wrecks.

natworldDSCN9992

It amuses me when cars cut in front of me and then change lanes and cut in front of people beside me and in the end I stay in my lane being careful and pass them when they get stuck in a lane not moving.  Click here for nature notes and here for Our World Tuesday.

Our World Tuesday and Nature Notes: Brrrrrrrrr

Like much of the U.S. the mid and late part of this past week was cold in my neck of the woods.

natworldDSCN9872

I particularly feel for the birds.

natworldDSCN9855

Now that I'm commuting to work instead of working from home I can't change out the water as much as other winters but I do it when I can.

natworldDSCN9900

I guess I really need one of those heated bird baths but we usually don't have long winters like some places so I have put it off. Click here for Our World Tuesday and here for Nature Notes.

The Weekend in Black and White: evergreens and deciduous trees

Not the best shot but I liked the contrast in texture between evergreens and deciduous trees at the lake.

SkyWatch Friday: First Week of January

I sneaked some sunrise shots on the way to work Tuesday.

skywatchDSCN9799

I'd gotten better about not trying to take any driver shots but I have cheated lately.

skywatchDSCN9801

I rationalize by shooting blind as in I keep my eye on the road not on what I'm shooting.

skywatchDSCN9801b

I wished I could have taken time with my sunrise moon shots but I was surprised to get them at all.

skywatchDSCN9826

The shots above and below were taken Wednesday morning before I got into my car.

skywatchDSCN9828

I took the next shot at the stop light before I got out of my subdivision.

skywatchDSCN9830

I caught another stop light shot on the road I take to the bypass.

skywatchDSCN9835

Next a blind shot I took on the bypass.

skywatchDSCN9836

Wednesday afternoon when I left work, I took a few shots before getting in my car.

skywatchDSCN9842

It was almost too cold to take the time for a few shots.

skywatchDSCN9843

Last, one I took heading onto the highway going home.

Nature Notes and Our World Tuesday: Photographs I took on the first day of 2015

I took some shots of Jack Frost's visit to the leaves in my back yard.

naturenotesourwDSCN9702b

I liked the light on my nandina bush.

natworldDSCN9710

Bill and I went on a walk mid morning as we usually do on New Year's day.

natworldDSCN9728

The shallow parts of the stream and marsh had some ice.

natworldDSCN9736

It was a beautiful day.

natworldDSCN9751

I thought the Canada Geese were posing for me.

natworldDSCN9761

The cormorants looked like they were standing guard.

natworldDSCN9772

I almost missed the heron hiding in the woods.

natworldDSCN9777

A good day to start off the new year followed by a rather wet but warmer weekend.
