That's My World Tuesday: A Great Blue Heron at Shelley Lake (Raleigh, NC)

I could have had better lighting and a more powerful zoom but I enjoyed photographing the Great Blue Heron walking on its long legs.
Photobucket
I was impressed by how it ambled up and over the logs and driftwood.
Photobucket
Then when he or she was walking on level ground the legs were lifted up high as if there were still logs to cross .

How nice to happen upon that sight! I have lived in Raleigh for 41 years, but I've never been to Shelley Lake. I need to remedy that.

I saw one of these guys (I think that's what he was anyway) down at Topsail last summer. They're amazing to watch when they move through the water on those legs. There's barely a ripple. Didn't realize you'd find them this far inland, but I guess if the gulls come this far other species would too.

I wonder how those thin legs could carry the weight of its body. If it's human, he'd have some knee problems by now :) Amazing nature is.

Have a great week Carver.

I love watching herons of all colors. We have many around here but they don't like to pose. Often they stay away from the trails where we can't get a good shot.

It looks like you were pretty close! They are not that easy to photograph if they know they are being watched. You must have been very quiet.

Lovely pictures. Funny the bird did not take the easiest way.

They are such a joy to observe. They have such grace as they move about the shorelines and not causing even a ripple. I love the reflection shot.

I like what you did here. It's too bad about the litter in his world. These are wonderful.
