The Canada Goose was sunning on the top of the dam while the humans were fighting the cold by walking briskly.
The gulls below were ice skating.
The heron was bunched up for warmth.
The main part of the lake that froze was the shallower parts and the creeks.
The cormorants can stand for a long time with their wings spread out.
I took the shot below at my house when the sun was rising and the birds were keeping an eye on me putting out cold morning treats.
That morning when I walked at Shelley Lake I had to keep an eye out for slick spots on the cycling and walking path.
There were a lot of cool reflections that morning.
The marshy part leading up to the lake had a lot of ice streams.
I knew it was going to get well above freezing the next day so I focused on ice shots while they lasted.
The strange weather event involved Friday warming up during the night which is the opposite of normal.
There was close to a 60 degree difference between the coldest and warmest temperature this past week.
The weather seems to get weirder and weirder.
I like the icy reflection below.
The rest of the shots are from a Sunday walk after the lake thawed out and we had torrential rains on Saturday.
It was still too chilly to want to wade into the lake to the flooded picnic table.
I know the birds are glad to have a break in the weather.
They should enjoy it while it lasts because the cold air is returning.
I guess I'll stop here since this post is long.

Sixty degrees change in temperature?! Wow! That's a major shift. Looks like you were quick enough to get quite a few ice photos.
Looks like a cold day for walking, but at least the day is clear. Love the bird/fowl watching you do in this lake.

Hi, I like the photo of the ice skating gulls. It doesn't get really cold here in the Philippines and I've never seen frozen surface of a body of water so it's also nice to see reflections on them.
