My kolkwitzia amabilis won't begin blooming until late April unless it's early this year as other flowers have been. I picked shots from late April 2010 and late April 2011 for this post.
According to Wikipedia, kolkwitzia amabilis originated in Central China. It was named for Richard Kolkwitz, a Professor of Botany in Berlin (1901 to 1938) and in 1954 he became a Professor of Botany at the Free University of Berlin. He died in 1956 at the age of 83. A devise used to determine the quantity of cells and cell aggregates of phytoplankton, the Kolkwitzhammer, was also named after him.

I have not seen this before, it's so pretty.
I might have stumbled onto this plant in the past and been completely unaware of its association with Professor Kolkwitz. How wonderful it must be to have a plant named after you. Forever growing and never forgotten! Great choice for the letter "K" on a spring day. :)
Very interesting informations!I love the second picture!

I just love spring flowers... the color, the scents (often). I can never remember their names (except maybe daffodils), but just love them.
Have a great week!

A very pretty shrub and very good shots - is it a scented shrub I wonder - have a lovely week = Jane UK
Beautiful flowering tree.
I have never seen this flowering tree before and it is spectacular - what a thing to look forward to in the Springtime!
I haven't seen this before....love the inside of the petals.

I can't even say that name! The flowers look much like the ones on a desert willow tree.
Me neither, I do not know how to pronounce this name. Gorgeous flowers, Carver, beautiful choice for k.
k is for...
Beautiful flower. Horrendous name. Imagine being in kindergarten and having to learn to spell that!
They are so pretty!
Beautiful, delicate and intricate flowers. I daon't blame them for waiting for the weather to be warmer to bloom.
Such beautiful blooms you have.

Lovely bush! I love them and have two in my gardens. I think yours will bloom a long time before mine do, though. :))
Not familiar with this flower, but it's pretty!
Pretty flowers in bloom :)
