ABC Wednesday: H is for Heron

Great blue heron with his head held high. All the herons in this post are great blues but I won't keep repeating the G part since this is an H post.

Herons look so much smaller when their heads are lower on curved necks.

I heard the heron hiss before I saw it where it was partially hidden.

This heron was hunting fish from a fish feeding station intended to help encourage a larger fish population.

Have you ever heard the saying: if you feed the birds you feed the birds. The meaning being that by feeding prey birds you encourage predators like hawks. This is a case of: If you feed the fish you feed the herons.

These shots of the great blue herons are a mix of ones I've taken at several lakes over the past few years.

Depending on the positions of the neck, this bird takes on many personas. Proud, hunched or lurching forward towards the next meal, it is a magnificent sight in the wild!

Great collection of great blues! (I forgot this was an "H" post ;>)....)

All herons look like entirely different birds when they have their necks extended instead of shortened (or whatever that words is I want).

Thanks for collecting and sharing!

Outstanding images!, We get blue heron from time to time early mornings in our, or next door neighbors yard, and sometimes see them wing there way home at sunset, always a treat to see them.
