SkyWatch Friday: Cold and Sunny

I went on a short walk at Shelley Lake this Wednesday morning expecting to see the lake completely frozen.

At first I was surprised that the lake was only partially frozen because it has frozen all the way over with less extreme temperatures other years.

Then it occurred to me that the unseasonably warm days prior to the extremely cold ones probably left part of the lake warm enough to take longer to freeze while the shallower parts went ahead and turned to ice.

I know the water birds are happy that there are some liquid portions of the lake left for now. There were gulls gathered on the solid ice keeping an eye out in the liquid part for fish or I assume that's what they were doing.

Thanks to everyone for visiting. To answer the question, this lake doesn't freeze over every winter. Last winter was unusually mild and it didn't freeze at all but for several winters in a row prior to that it froze solid for part of the winter. It's different every year.

You take us on so many beautiful walks with you. Oh, to have a park area like this close by. It would be wonderful. These are lovely shots.

Beautiful and scenic.

It has been cold enough here to where some of the ponds have a skim of ice on them which is a rare thing here.

Gree grass, blue skies, geese and lots of water, all the things I pine for in our severe heat.
