At first I was surprised that the lake was only partially frozen because it has frozen all the way over with less extreme temperatures other years.
Then it occurred to me that the unseasonably warm days prior to the extremely cold ones probably left part of the lake warm enough to take longer to freeze while the shallower parts went ahead and turned to ice.
I know the water birds are happy that there are some liquid portions of the lake left for now. There were gulls gathered on the solid ice keeping an eye out in the liquid part for fish or I assume that's what they were doing.

Wonderful sunny winter photos from your walk!Have a nice weekend,Carver.
so normally this lake freezes over in the wintertime?
Love those blue, blue, blue skies!! We haven't seen any like those in a while! Guess these guys are going to have to work overtime to get enough to eat!!! Great post and photos for the day, Carver!! Enjoy your weekend and stay warm!!
Thanks to everyone for visiting. To answer the question, this lake doesn't freeze over every winter. Last winter was unusually mild and it didn't freeze at all but for several winters in a row prior to that it froze solid for part of the winter. It's different every year.
You take us on so many beautiful walks with you. Oh, to have a park area like this close by. It would be wonderful. These are lovely shots.
Beautiful and scenic.
It has been cold enough here to where some of the ponds have a skim of ice on them which is a rare thing here.
So happy for the birds :)
Wonderful lake and blue sky.
Great photos. Hope the cold will not last too long.
Gree grass, blue skies, geese and lots of water, all the things I pine for in our severe heat.
such strange and wild weather variations this winter… beautiful photos Carver.
Adore your water shots -- whether unfrozen here or frozen in the post above.
