Tuesday was cold and the brown thrasher was puffed out while snacking on my deck wall.
The sparrow was also puffed out and I love those yellow eyebrows.
When it began snowing on Wednesday it was very cold and the snow immediately stuck to whatever it hit.
The male cardinal below doesn't look too happy but like the female cardinal and sparrow above is finding something to eat.
The junco below has a seed in his mouth.
At first the snow was perfect, all snow and quite beautiful.
The birds below are a junco a little higher and a sparrow on the ground.
Below is a male rufous-sided towhee.
The next shot is of a female cardinal.
Overnight the snow changed to freezing rain and sleet creating an ice world.
The ice was beautiful but scary particularly when I lost power a few times.
I was lucky because I didn't lose power longer than a few hours at a time so not a problem for me. The reason there is a lot of seed on the ground is that during bad weather, I dump out wet feeding containers and provide dry seed but the wet seed doesn't go to waste.
Above is a female cardinal and below is a rufous-sided towhee and a male cardinal.
The children who were out of school had a blast enjoying winter nature.
The freezing rain changed to snow again on Thursday before finally ending.
I was glad that I could work from home and enjoy the beauty without adding to the accidents on the road.
I think male cardinals are a bright spot in winter with their red feathers.
The snow on the icy trees was lovely.
I wanted snow this winter but I'm officially ready for spring now.
Believe it or not next weekend is supposed to be so warm I could almost pull out my shorts.
I doubt the warmth will last but winter is drawing to a close in central NC where I live.
Friday was a beautiful day and I went for a walk.
It was a short walk because although the roads were fairly clear the side walks were still slippery.
The mourning doves below look like a Valentine's Day post card and it was Valentine's Day when I shot them.
I managed to dig out the bird baths from the ice and snow.
I love blue skies with snow on the ground.
A volunteer holly bush peeked out of the snow and ice.
When the snow started melting I spotted the daffodils coming up below.
Saturday morning was a few degrees above freezing and was pouring down raining
That afternoon the sun came out and I thought it would be a good day for a longer walk.
The neighborhood was fine but the park trails were still icy and I hadn't brought my walking stick.
I ended up turning around and walking in the neighborhood.
Saturday night was well below freezing but I assumed the Shelley Lake walk would be clear.
It was for the most part but surprisingly there was still some ice and snow.
I almost caught a photo of the geese flying in but they started landing before I got the shot.

This is such a pleasant neighborhood near where you live with wonderful pathways. I have to say the little bird with the bushy eyebrows reminded me a little of Groucho Marx!
Oh, how I wish we had some snow here! Your pictures are lovely, but those poor birds look cold.

There is one thing I enjoy about the snow and that is the birds. The snow brings so many birds to the yard and feeders. You have a wonderful variety there, Carver. I like seeing the Towhee and Cardinal together. Thanks for sharing, have a happy week!
Lovely shots. I really enjoyed seeing the snow and then the "after". I'm sure your beautiful birds were happy to see the water and the food! I think we are all looking forward to spring.

It's so beautiful there in winter ... and the icy pictures (when it is most dangerous out) are like works of art. I am so glad you can work from home ... and that you have choices of places to walk, so you can pick safe routes...

For us in Connecticut, snow has claimed the lion's share of our attention. How we are resenting it!
