I took the photograph below on Sunday in the NC Art Museum's Park. The work in the center is titled The Wind Machine (created in 2002) and is by Vollis Simpson (born 1919). There is a PBS story about Vollis Simpson and his whirligigs online if you click here. The smokestack on the right operated the Polk Youth Prison's power plant and is what remains of that prison whose site is now part of the Museum Art Park. My post below shows the smokestack in a monochrome shot from a different angle.

what a fascinating looking contraption. does it work?
That is QUITE a whirligig!
I might not have realized this was a sculpture if you hadn't said so. Looks pretty functional (though I'd have no clue what function it might serve).
The windmachine looks great. An interesting piece of work.
That is indeed a whirligig if I ever saw one!! Fascinating! Great shot! Have a great week!
Interesting and great shot!
Thanks for sharing. Have a wonderful week.

It does look so much like a working contraption. Your my world's are always so fascinating.
What fascinating interesting things you learn as you wander the internet. Simpsons whirligigs are fascinating. Great photo

Interesting machine! What is it used for? Or is it just a piece of art? Thanks for your visit.
How fun and interesting to learn more about the wind machine! Don't you mean "That's my World" as opposed to "That's my Word."? You are so on thop of all these themes. What an inspiration.
Wow is that ever cool, great capture.
Have a great week!

Thanks to everyone for visiting. The whirligig is not functional, it's just there for art. I had to laugh when it was pointed out that I'd titled my post That's my Word. I of course meant world and fixed it.
The whirligig pole looks quite interesting I'll bet kids love to look at it.
Great photo.
Green grass! Wow.
That's a neat windmill. NC rocks.
So interesting stuff!
Wonderful shot!

The wind mcine is a bit like the old mouse trap game. Fun post.
