ABC Wednesday: V is for Voluminous Vines

Virginia Creeper is a vine which has volunteered to grow under my gutters and around my door.

It used to hang much lower around the door but a very vocal girl scout selling cookies expanded vociferously about how creepy she found it to have it hanging over her head.

I vetoed my impulse to tell her it was supposed to be creepy since it was Virginia Creeper. I didn't want to make her a victim of my vituperative impulses since she was very young and I'm not that vile, so I pulled off the vines growing under the one shown above.

The ivy on the side of my house gets thicker even when I pull some of it down.

I think it's very possible that one day the vines of ivy will support my aging house. My positive side veers towards that possibility.

The varied vines at different parts of my house may be getting out of hand but I enjoy the verbose birds that peak out from some of them.
abcwedblcDSCN2460
The blackberry vines make a variety of birds happy and I feel virtuous about the victory they feel when they spot a juicy ripe berry to eat.

I do find it a bit vile of the honeysuckle vines to pull down young dogwood trees. Some of the many vines growing over my deck wall also grow up through my decaying deck table.

Wow, I think you win the prize for the most V words in a post.
Your vines very well may support your house someday. (:0)
It looks so lush where you live.
Honeysuckle can be such a bear once it gets a foot hold. Your poor dogwood may not stand a chance against it.

I love the VINES, but fear that they're doing harm to your home.

The vines look like they like your soil and find your house perfect for climbing.

I think you had a Very good time with this post, Carver. I have honeysuckle pulling down the arch over the sidewalk in the back yard. I keep propping the arch up with various kinds of sticks and spikes duct-taped to it. Not exactly beautiful. LOL

Didn't know honeysuckle could damage your home. There is a house in North Wales that is covered with Virginia Creeper. It turns bright red in the fall. It's a very old house and sits beside the River Clwyd (Think that's the right name) and is on the way from Conway to Bettys y Coed. It is a small restaurant and serves the most delicious cream teas.

I think this post shows how nature will conquer everything when one day we will all be gone.
And that's exactly my kind of garden and house - lovely green all the way around :)

I would love to have vines in particular Virginia Creeper - lovely autumn colours - growing on my house but would be worried about structural damage or damp.

I love to have black berry vines on my wall.

So you are not going to have your whole wall coves by the ivy?

Oh, look at those vines! I love that look and surely they'll be of help when it's time to assist the rafters! Great shots!

Even though they tend to take over...I love the looks of ivy and vines.

You have a Virginia Creeper, and I have a Creeping Charlie in a pot.

You have a lovely home and I think the vines are enchanting.

I love vines growing on houses. Our house, many years ago in Melbourne was covered in Virginia creeper. It was the most effective air-conditioner we had.
I really love your garden and so many birds nest in creepers. I always had several nests in our Clematis.
A most beautiful post.
