When I see a yield sign like the one below, I know what to do. I slow down and stop if a car is coming and give it the right of way.
It's hard to see it, but there is a pedestrian crosswalk not too far from the stop light in the shot below. In the middle of the crosswalk is a yield sign and that's clear to me. I know to slow down and stop if someone is getting ready to walk through the crosswalk. I think it's a strange place for a crosswalk since there is a stop light so close for pedestrians to use but at least I know what to do because there is a yield sign at that crosswalk.
I find crosswalks like the next one confusing because they don't have yield signs. As a pedestrian, I'm not sure when I see a car coming if they are supposed to yield to me. I know if someone is half way across a cross walk with a warning sign, cars must stop for the pedestrian but I'm never sure if the warning signs operate like a yield sign.
There's another warning sign below for a pedestrian crosswalk in the shot below although it may be hard to see. The point I'm trying to make is I never know when it's just a warning sign, if a pedestrian who sees a car coming should wait for the car before crossing or if it's up to the car to slow down and wait for the pedestrian even if they aren't in the crosswalk yet. I wish all crosswalks had yield signs too because then I know what is supposed to happen.
In addition to the lights that flash at a railroad crossing, indicating that a car should stop, this one has a warning sign which is bizarre to me. Does it mean you should slow down and yield to runaway trailers escaping from their trucks? I hope that doesn't happen much.

Signs can be confusing for sure. I guess my best advice would be when you are in doubt drive defensibly and be polite. (I hope I will listen and take that advice too. Haha!)
In NYS, the car is supposed to yield to the pedestrian in the crosswalk. As a pedestrian, I NEVER assiume that will actually happen. the drivers in Vermont are MUCH better at yielding to walkers.

In California the pedestrian is suppose to have the right of way. I never trust that though.
Impatient people in cars don't always pay attention to the yield and caution signs.

It's the same here in Washington -- drivers are supposed to yield to pedestrians -- whether they do or not seems to actually depend on the driver???? not the sign. Great post for the Y Day, Carver, as always! Enjoy your day!

Some traffic signs are so difficult that a driver is confused and will be dangerously distracted,
I see those signs too, but never thought of using them for "Y"...how clever you are!

I'm always glad when the sign tells me to YIELD. I am sure there must be rules for who goes first, but I always find it confusing and so am happy someone tells me what to do!
I also don't trust drivers to yield to pedestrians, even if that is the law. I'd rather be safe than sorry. I don't stop for pedestrians who are approaching crosswalks but not in them yet. However, if a pedestrian is beginning to cross, I stop. What worries me, is some drivers keep going in the lane beside me because they don't know I've stopped for a pedestrian. Scares the wits out of me when they do that.
I love that yield sign in the first photo, it looks like one corner of it has been bent! LOL

Brilliant post! I never thought of the yield sign for Y and what a great choice! I agree with you too-signs can be pretty confusing.
It is hard when North Americans drive on the left side of the road, in New Zealand, at a junction, we also have give way to the right.

Neat photos... I was just browsing through the signs and such and though, "gosh, we don't have half of those signs here in Canada and if I was driving where u live, I'd be totally breaking a lot of laws!!" =)
I was going to say what Roger did. But it can be confusing and I never expect a car to stop, I am always cautious...
There is an old joke about a woman stopped at a yield sign with a driver behind her leaning out of the window shouting, "It say, 'Yield' Lady, not 'Give up'!"
