I thought I'd feature the North Carolina Sate Fairgrounds in this post. It's a very extensive complex which is used for many cultural events, flea markets, horse shows, and for other purposes as well as being the site for the state fair.
The shots above and below are of the J.S. Dorton Arena which is one of the more distinctive buildings at the fair grounds. You can learn more about the arena at this link. I went to the circus as a child at that arena and took my daughter when she was a child. I also went to horse shows there before the large horse complex was added to the fairgrounds. The arena shots were take a few weeks ago.
Below is a map of the 2008 NC State Fair which shows the whole complex and where various parts of the fair took place but it also shows some of the permanent buildings. You can go to this link to learn more about the individual facilities that are housed on the grounds.
There is a permanent flea market on the grounds with indoor and outdoor booths which operates year round except when the fair is taking place. Below is a recent shot of some of the indoor market facilities. I was surprised to see the Canadian Geese in the grass. There is a pond on the other side of the grounds but I guess they were finding more food here.
The last shot was taken when I was stopped at the railroad tracks back in September of 2008 and shows one of the entrances to the grounds. As a child those buildings reminded me of a fairy tale for some reason.

Wow! That's quite a structure. Ours is a big more humble!!
That is an incredible building! Oh, and your blue skies! Love the flea market, too! What a fun place to go! Thanks, Carver, for sharing your world!! Have a great week!
That's very impressive. I've never even been to the CA state fairgrounds; never been to a state fair. I wonder if CA's is as impressive as yours :)
That looks like a wonderful complex. The buildings in the last photo do evoke fairytales a bit.
wow! those are incredibly amazing shot!!!good job and thanks for sharing!
You really captured that beautiful building, Carver.
The shots taken so well, very informative too.
Heh. What they don't know is that you don't want to be within two miles of the place when the fair is going on unless that's where you're going. You'd think they would have a traffic pattern figured out by now. It's better than it used to be though.
Love your shots of Dorton Arena. I need to get out there one weekend and get some better ones myself. (If it ever stops raining that is.)
Great place for kids and adults. Excellent post!
The architecture there is just gorgeous. So clean and modern yet classic.
What a lovely fairground you have! Thanks for sharing your world.
That's an impressive building, great to visit with so much going on there. Well photographed.
Wow those are great pics carver, I'd love to see inside that arena. Thanks for sharing.
Have a great week!

This is an awesome building. A real frame filler
What a lovely building, we have a very large Fairgrounds here as well.
Very nice
The entrance is like a gatehouse to a castle, that was probably your association. A really great complex with so many uses and memories for young and old. Interesting post.
a very impressive building you got there and i just love the clear blue skies:)
My world is here
I always loved going to a fair. Such fun.
Impressive architecture. I see that its a very memorable place for you. Nice photos!
WOW! Your fairgrounds put little old Orange County, California's fairgrounds to shame ... but I enjoyed all aspects of your post ;--)
Hugs and blessings,
Beautiful building! The sky are now blue too! I think its much fun to be on a fair there!
Very interesting world, Carver! That is some incredible building too! :)
