The Weekend in Black and White: NC Outerbanks 1999 first digital camera

I was looking through some old shots and wished that my first digital camera hadn't been so lousy since I took some photos never to be repeated. I think the shots are at least marginally better in black and white than they are in the original color.

The shot above was of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse when they were working on moving it 2,900 feet southwest of its original location due to beach erosion. It was successfully moved in July 1999, a few months after I took that shot, but it took much longer for renovations.

The shot above is the Ocracoke Lighthouse. We were staying in Ocracoke when we took the side trip to Cape Hatteras to check on the progress they were making with the big move of that lighthouse. Not only has the Ocracoke Lighthouse never had to be moved it is the same one that was built in 1823 although in 1955 the light was automated.

Above is Bill and our daughter when I was mean making them pose in the high winds on the ferry. Last is the wake the ferry was making.

Click for the weekend in black and white. By the way my first digital camera was a freebie for buying something else so I can't complain. I just wish I'd taken some of the pictures with Bill's old SLR but we hadn't even brought it with us. I think I'd had this digital camera for several years and it's frustrating looking back on how many years most of the photographs I took were with the freebie digital.

we are all headed there the 27th of August...cannot wait to get to the lighthouses. we go every summer the last week in august....the rates are so much cheaper. it always upsets my principal, but tooooo bad. i bring him goodies and he is happy. love the shot of your daughter and husband. it is always nice to put a personal touch onto our blogging. genie

I like your shots of Cape Hatteras and your family, even though they were taken with a freebie camera!

I love lighthouses and these are great. Monochrome lends itself to these, good choice!

I've been contemplating a day off to visit one 'locally' and this just might be the inspiration I need.

all lovely photos, but I think my favorite is the water at the end... the texture is wonderful in b and w!

I went completely to digital in 2000, making my photos from then to about 2005 near useless. But you're idea of turning them into B&W is a good one. I like this series of the lighthouse, but your husband-daughter shot is a keeper!

I expect there was something wrong with your camera or you wouldn't be explaining about it being a freebie - but the pictures look excellent and characterful to me and I like them a lot.

Very good and nice photos.
Black and white photos always look better, nicer... than in color. :) Just my opinion.

Nice pictures - I like the perspective in the second shot!

the photos looks a bit "old fashioned". Maybe due to the camera. But I like it.

These are all good shots. No apologies needed here. I like the second lighthouse shot and the portrait on the ferry best.

Making them pose is what family is all about! Love those shots. Time for me and Della to find us some NC lighthouses....You're an inspiration.
