ABC Wednesday: H is for hydrangea

H is for hydrangea and below is a shot of one of my hydrangea blossoms in last summer's heat.

abcwedsinh9586
This time of year my hydrangea bushes only have a few little green leaves.
abcwedhyd4443
However, they are beginning to awaken from their wintry state.
abcwedhyd4445
The hydrangea in the second shot is a baby I separated from the hydrangea in the third shot.
abcwedhydsum9601
Above is a shot of the baby I took last summer. As you can see baby Hydrangea grew up to be an adult. Below is a shot of its parent from last summer.
abcwedlrghyd9568
The parent hydrangea keeps shooting out babies that block the entrance into my garden. I wish I was still strong enough to dig them up but it takes strength to separate clingy babies from parents.
abcwedanb9574
I like the way the colors change and are varied through the growing season.
abcwedsibw9577
It will be about 3 or 4 months before the hydrangea blossoms are in full bloom but they get green in a hurry. Below is a shot from early May of last year and the hydrangea is the green bush on the right.

Beautiful hydrangea blossoms, Carver. Too bad you can't have someone else dig up the "babies" - maybe you could advertise "free hydrangea bushes, U-Dig"!!

Beautiful capture of the Hydrangea. Love the blue and lavender ones. When my youngest daughter got married, her bouquet was one huge blue hydrangea.

In fact, I have posted my watercolor of blue and lavender hydrangeas for one of my H's today. Looks like one of your photos.

Love hydrangeas - they are so spectacular and the colours so varied and beautiful. I have a nice dried bouquet from my daughter's garden that is about five years old and still gorgeous.

I am glad to see that yours also have only small leaves. I planted mine in a shade garden near the foundation of the house and thought the cold would be ok since it is usually good even further north. But, it looked so awful a few weeks back... now I can see the leaves starting to fill back in. It is a Citiline Rio and is supposed to be deep purple with green in the center. However, I was confused and thought the purple would appear with basic soil, so I added finely pulverized egg shells ground to a powder... and then found that it really wanted acidic soil to be deep purple. My flowers ended up a wonderful pink and that was ok. I have changed up the soil amendments and hopefully they will do better this year... only their second.
