The Weekend in Black and White: Old Railroad coal building

This is an old railroad coal building in Thurmond, WV. Although no longer used it remains as a reminder of the past.

Being from up further north and not having ever seen the coal mining area before. I was really fascinated by it all.

There seems to be a spurt of interest in deserted buildings at present - I hadn't realised there are so many . . . and they almost always provide lots of shape and interest.

I've never seen a coal mining area, either and my first impression was that this is one very tall building.

I have seen similar buildings occasionally, but never was able to explain them. Perhaps they had the same use as this one!

Nice shot, it looks good in b/w.

A great composition. Love the overgrowth surrounding it.

That's an amazing barn! Love the old structures that have "seen" a lot of history!
Your sky watch photos are wonderful too. The green landscape against the bright blue sky and sprawling white clouds make these photos look like paintings!
*have a very happy weekend*

Fascinating building Carver. I'm surprised at how good it still looks. There's so much texture in those walls.
