ABC Wednesday: F is for Frozen

Most of the snow and freezing rain we had last week has melted but low night time temperatures have refrozen some areas and shaded places still have snow.   For F week I decided to find something frozen to photograph this Monday and I settled on a field which is used for a variety of sports children play. I was surprised by how much of this field was frozen because a near by baseball field only had a little snow around the edges where the sun didn't hit it.

I stepped through the gate to get a better position to take the shot above and I cracked the frozen ice as you can see below. I had my camera around my neck and didn't want to fall on it so I held the fence with one hand and took the picture with the other hand. By the way, a bad fall which would injure me is of even greater concern than my camera but in the past my automatic attempts to protect my camera have resulted in my having worse falls than I would have if that wasn't my first instinct. I don't plan to put my camera above my safety but when it comes to reflexive actions, I find that my camera is what I go for first rather than protecting my own fragile bones.

ABC Wednesday: Fis for Frog

A catbird who think she's a fairy princess tries to kiss a frog hoping he'll turn into a fine Prince. The frog falls back as if he's a frightened fellow.

ABC Wednesday: F is for Frozen

First I thought I'd show you my frozen daffodils.

Sunday night we had freezing rain that changed over to snow and then back to sleet and freezing rain.

I have missed not having snow this winter so I didn't mind the frozen mix.

I went out early Monday to snap some frozen shots before it melted.

ABC Wednesday: F is for Ferns

I love finding large groups of ferns with full fronds in the forest.

Ferns and flowers following the path to the Paul Greene cabin in the NC botanical garden below are lovely.

I planted ferns in my front garden and sadly many were lost to drought and being choked by vines (this is an old shot below during an early spring).

I think it's fun that the next fern volunteered on the foundation of my house and it's indestructible, having grown there now for 6 years.

ABC Wednesday: Fancy Fire Fixtures

Last week I showed you an elegant entrance at the Colonial Governor's Palace in Colonial Williamsburg, VA. This week I thought I'd take you inside the same palace for a look at some fancy fire fixtures.

The fanciest fireplace is in the main entrance room but there were so many people around it that I only managed a shot of the fancy firearms and swords on either side of the fireplace. There is also a candle which can produce a flame when lit.

ABC Wednesday: F is for Foggy Fall Frosty Frozen

Focusing on foggy, fall, frosty and frozen images. The formidable heat of August has me falling into a sweaty heap when I'm outside. Nice to remember that fall is coming soon, followed by winter.
tree
I love foggy days as long as I don't have to drive far from home. I particularly love fall leaves both on the trees and after they have fallen to form a carpet on the ground.

Sugar frosted leaves are one of the pleasures of fall and winter.

I also like going on a brisk walk in frigid weather. The last shot is from last winter when the lake was frozen and the seagull flew freely above it.

For anyone who hasn't figured it out yet, I am not a summer person at this point in my life. I do not care for the heat and humidity and am glad that I'll be rescued by fall. For other takes on the letter F, please visit the home of ABC Wednesday.
