My baby could boogie with very young steps. Since my baby turns 29 on March 2, I thought it appropriate to use this shot for the two photohunter themes and also for the Weekend in Black and White.

Our World Tuesday: Remains through the Ages

When my sister and I went to the cemetery where our parents' remains are buried this weekend, I noticed a little area with a low stone wall around it.
None of the head stones in that part were readable and were clearly very old. The ones below weren't in the S.A.R. part and as I recall were 1800s or early 1900s.
Our parents' remains are buried under the tree in the next shot.
The next day when my sister and I were at the North Carolina Art Museum in the Egyptian section, I couldn't help but think about how odd it is in a way for someone's casket to end up in a museum.
The shot above is the coffin of Amunred Date - Circa 714-524 B.C.E. Below is the inner coffin, in the front of the shot, of Djed Mut Date Circa 715-525 B.C.E.
Below is a Roman Osteotheke (Bone Box) from the second half of the second century.
The next shot shows another view of the Osteotheke. I would be fine having my remains scattered in the wind when the time comes, but it does seem odd that ancient coffins and bone boxes can wind up in a museum. My instinct is that if it means something to someone and to their family for their remains to be buried in a burial site, they probably should stay put and not end up in a museum. Of course contemporary coffins and urns are unlikely to be interesting enough for museums of the future but the ones in the NCMA were once contemporary for their times and intended to stay in a final spot. Just a thought.

The Weekend in Black and White: NC Outerbanks 1999 first digital camera

I was looking through some old shots and wished that my first digital camera hadn't been so lousy since I took some photos never to be repeated. I think the shots are at least marginally better in black and white than they are in the original color.
The shot above was of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse when they were working on moving it 2,900 feet southwest of its original location due to beach erosion. It was successfully moved in July 1999, a few months after I took that shot, but it took much longer for renovations.
The shot above is the Ocracoke Lighthouse. We were staying in Ocracoke when we took the side trip to Cape Hatteras to check on the progress they were making with the big move of that lighthouse. Not only has the Ocracoke Lighthouse never had to be moved it is the same one that was built in 1823 although in 1955 the light was automated.
Above is Bill and our daughter when I was mean making them pose in the high winds on the ferry. Last is the wake the ferry was making.
Click for the weekend in black and white. By the way my first digital camera was a freebie for buying something else so I can't complain. I just wish I'd taken some of the pictures with Bill's old SLR but we hadn't even brought it with us. I think I'd had this digital camera for several years and it's frustrating looking back on how many years most of the photographs I took were with the freebie digital.

ABC Wednesday: Choices

My name is Carver which begins with the letter C so I have many choices. I, Carver, took the shot below of a Cadmium yellow Cab in front of a museum in Manhattan. A couple of my family members are sitting on the right hand side of the shot by a column waiting for me and a couple of other family members to arrive in a cab. My family gathered in Manhattan, where one of my sisters lives, a couple of years ago for my 50th (half century) birthday.
Many more than a couple of years ago, a camera caught a cute shot of me, Carver, in a cotton night gown lying on a cotton bedspread.
Another cute shot from Carver's (my) baby book, shows me covered in a cotton towel.
One last shot of baby Carver, shows me with my couple of sisters on either side while I'm standing up in my crib. That may be a portable crib or playpen since other shots of baby Carver in her crib show a much higher different style crib. All three of us are wearing flannel cotton night clothes.
