ABC Wednesday: X is for Xtemmas

Xtemmas is an early version of Xmas dating to 1551. Around 1100 the term was written as "Xp̄es mæsse" in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. Xmas began to be used in the mid 1700s.  The "-mas" part is from the Latin-derived Old English word for Mass, while the "X" comes from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the Greek word Χριστός which comes into English as "Christ". I spy an X with my little eye.

I did a similar X post once before except I'm using different photographs.

You can probably tell I spotted these X shapes in different seasons.

The final shot has an X made my trees crossing on the left (top half of shot) as well as the ones on the bridge.

ABC Wednesday: W is for Wren and X for X-mas

When a Carolina Wren landed on my neighbor's X-mas wreath I decided to cheat and do one post for ABC Wednesday's W and X days. W is the theme this week and next week is X right in time for X-mas. I hope everyone has a happy holiday.

X is the roman numeral for 10 and below is a winter shot of X waxwings in a tree.

ABC Wednesday: X is for 10

X is the Roman Numeral 10 and can be seen on clocks.

On Roman Numeral Clocks you see X for ten and IX for nine.

You also see XI for eleven and XII for twelve. Granted none of the times on the clocks I'm showing you include X but since X is on the clock face 4 times I figured it would work for X day.

ABC Wednesday: X is for XXX

If you don't find it too exhausting, you can find XXX by looking in one direction through the bridge. By turning to examine the other side of the bridge, you will see that XXX is also there.

I find it interesting that although X is rarely the first letter in English language words, it is exceedingly common as the first sound in English language words. You don't have to exert much effort to excel in finding examples of that in this post.

ABC Wednesday: X marks the spot

X was a hard one for me so I went out on my deck and drew an X to mark the spot.

Then I turned around and noticed that X forms the back of my deck chair.
