ABC Wednesday: K is for kindred

A couple of kindred spirits sharing a sun kissed part of the deck on a cold morning. It must be kismet that put the mourning doves in view of my camera when I was wondering what to do for K week.

Be they kith or kin the pair of cardinal girls look kind of cute facing each other on a forked branch.

ABC Wednesday: K is for kingfisher

I hear kingfishers a lot more often than I see them. But this was a rare case where it landed somewhere and posed for me.

ABC Wednesday: K is for Kitty

The kitty cats in my neighborhood know that my house is a good spot for birdwatching.

I prefer that the kitties hang out with inanimate birds like the hummer above.

I don't like the kitties to annoy the birds in the nesting box, under my roof eaves, by watching them from my back stoop like the kitty above is doing. His reaction to my attitude is demonstrated in the next shot.

Our city has an ordinance that kitties are supposed to stay in their own houses and yards but the kitties are so comfortable in my yard they climb on my car.

When I used to have two dogs at my house the kitties weren't as comfortable straying into my yard.

Since I no longer have any dogs at my house, all the neighborhood kitties wander around my yard as if its their own.

ABC Wednesday: K is for kolkwitzia

My kolkwitzia amabilis won't begin blooming until late April unless it's early this year as other flowers have been. I picked shots from late April 2010 and late April 2011 for this post.

According to Wikipedia, kolkwitzia amabilis originated in Central China. It was named for Richard Kolkwitz, a Professor of Botany in Berlin (1901 to 1938) and in 1954 he became a Professor of Botany at the Free University of Berlin. He died in 1956 at the age of 83. A devise used to determine the quantity of cells and cell aggregates of phytoplankton, the Kolkwitzhammer, was also named after him.

ABC Wednesday: K is for Killington

I took this shot of the road sign for Killington Drive last April because I thought I might use it for K in an ABC Wednesday post at some point.

Since this street is in my neighborhood and when I walk around the block I encounter it, I have shots through all the seasons of Killington Dr.

I think the mailbox below qualifies as pop kitsch. I always laugh when I walk past it.

The shots above are spring on Killington and the next shots will be summer.

I kid my neighbors who notice me taking pictures all the time that I'm not with the C.I.A. or F.B.I. If I was I'd be doing a poor job of being surreptitious.

Looks like the kiddies at the house below on Killington have fun swings.

Now I'm moving into later summer on Killington.

I kind of like how the house below is hidden by the trees.

These shots weren't all take during the same year. I had way too many choices when looking at neighborhood walk shots that included Killington. For one thing when I walk out of the neighborhood to the main road which takes me to the pharmacy, I walk briefly on Killington. If I go in the other direction to the trails leading to the lake I often choose Killington. I live on a dead end road (it's called a court but it's really a short dead end road).

I think the next summery looking shots are more towards fall but the leaves aren't changing yet.

Now it's in the full force of fall on Killington. Well not now but it was when I took the next few pictures.

As far as what it's like in the present we are just beginning into early fall/autumn where I live.

I can't wait until it does start looking like this in my neighborhood.

I think we may have an earlier fall this year than we normally do as I started noticing changes earlier than normal.

The pine trees below were catching the snow on Killington during last winter. I actually shot them from my back deck because the taller trees on Killington are visible from my back yard.

I particularly like the snowy Killington trees against the blue sky.

One last winter tree I shot during a walk on K is for Killington. I never knew I'd say Killington this many times in a single post.

ABC Wednesday: K is for kilter

This goose was literally and figuratively off kilter. She was standing at the entrance to a shopping area honking at the top of her lungs, several miles from any of the lakes or golf courses where the geese usually hang out. I don't know if it was the cold snap, being out of her comfort zone or some other issue but she was well and truly off kilter.

Rocks and other ornamental features in landscaping are visually pleasing when they are slightly off kilter.

ABC Wednesday: K is for Kite

The first kite I will show you is flying at the beach high in the air. This is the kind of kite which is released by letting out string which is wrapped on a hand held handle.

When I was on vacation at Atlantic Beach, NC the kite above is the only one of its kind I saw. However, I saw quite a few different kitesurfers along the beach.

Although kitesurfing has been around for a while, the first time I noticed them in NC at this beach was three or maybe four years ago.

I was surprised by how many kitesurfers I saw at the NC beach this year.
