ABC Wednesday: The letter V

I thought it was very nice of the jets to form the letter V across the sky for this week's ABC Wednesday.

ABC Wednesday: V is for Vise

The victorious squirrel holds the pecan in its vise like grip.
 abcwedvisevicDSCN8586
Although they are pronounced the same, in the American/Canadian spelling vise is for the tool used for gripping and vice is for the sin. The British spelling has the tool spelled as vice like the sin.

ABC Wednesday: V is for Veins

After deciding that veins would be my V word, I went on a vein hunt armed with my camera.
abcwedvnDSCN2738
I felt victorious as I found a veritable feast of veins.
abcwedbeinDSCN2754
The sheer volume of veins was very noticeable.
abcwedveinDSCN2733
The problem was my camera kept veering this way and that as the veins were everywhere.
abcwedveinDSCN2755
In between the strong vertical veins in the next shot are little barely visible veins.
abcwedveinDSCN2767
The variegated ivy in the next shot has lots of veins.
abcwedvenDSCN2727
Ivy is a vine and I bet you can't say vine vein vine vein 10 times very fast.

ABC Wednesday: V is for veranda(h)

Veranda has varied spellings since verdandah is another way that it's spelled.

ABCverandDSCN0506
The Moses Cone Manor has a veranda around part of it. As you can see in the front shot below part of the front has windows and is not a verandah, but on the other side of the entrance is a veranda and it wraps around the sides. I usually call verandas porches but a porch can be enclosed with a screen or glass and verandas are usually open with only a roof and railing. A veranda can also refer to the entrance so if the part below only had the small veranda in front of the door and didn't wrap around it could still be a veranda. According to that definition my front stoop could be a veranda but that would be silly since my stoop is a stoop not worthy of a fancy word like veranda.

ABC Wednesday: V is for Voluminous Vines

Virginia Creeper is a vine which has volunteered to grow under my gutters and around my door.

abcwedvirgcDSCN2502
It used to hang much lower around the door but a very vocal girl scout selling cookies expanded vociferously about how creepy she found it to have it hanging over her head.
abcwedvirgcrDSCN2506
I vetoed my impulse to tell her it was supposed to be creepy since it was Virginia Creeper. I didn't want to make her a victim of my vituperative impulses since she was very young and I'm not that vile, so I pulled off the vines growing under the one shown above.
abcwedvnDSCN2496
The ivy on the side of my house gets thicker even when I pull some of it down.
abcwevbdDSCN2492
I think it's very possible that one day the vines of ivy will support my aging house. My positive side veers towards that possibility.
abcwedvnDSCN2540
The varied vines at different parts of my house may be getting out of hand but I enjoy the verbose birds that peak out from some of them.
abcwedblcDSCN2460
The blackberry vines make a variety of birds happy and I feel virtuous about the victory they feel when they spot a juicy ripe berry to eat.
abcwedhocDSCN2520
I do find it a bit vile of the honeysuckle vines to pull down young dogwood trees. Some of the many vines growing over my deck wall also grow up through my decaying deck table.

ABC Wednesday: V is for vine

V is for vine and I bring you a vine which is very prolific, ivy. This ivy is holding a certain volume of snow but I don't know what the volume is. Since this is a shot from last winter even if I wanted to, I wouldn't be able to measure the volume of snow on the ivy. This vine had some snow on it about a week ago but I didn't get a very good shot of it so I'm using this old one.
