Our World Tuesday: Farmers Markets

We have a lot of Farmers Markets in the triangle area of North Carolina.

ourworld2IMG_7711
In Raleigh where I live we have the North Carolina State Farmers market which is open 7 days a week year round.
ourworld2IMG_7714
The state farmers market is a mix of enclosed building as well as the open air ones.
ourworld2IMG_7719
The open air parts are the only ones which aren't open in the winter.
ourworld2IMG_7720
In addition to fresh produce, the state farmers market sells NC wines, crafts, seafood, cheese, jams, and many other products.

For this post I'm pulling from shots taken at different times of the year which is why the open air part of the state market it empty below. However even in the winter the enclosed part shown above is busy. There are also several restaurants at the state farmers market.

All of the shots above were taken at the state farmers market. The next two shots were taken at the small midtown farmers market at North Hills, also in Raleigh, NC but only open Saturday mornings from April through November.

I haven't been to the new North Raleigh Farmers market yet but that's another of the smaller ones in my area. Funny that the midtown market is in North Hills and the North Raleigh one is further north but when North Hills was named that used to be the northern part of town. Now North Hills has become midtown with the city sprawl.

There used to be a downtown Raleigh Farmers Market (City Market) in Moore Square in the building below.
ourworld2IMG_4704
There is still a City Market but it has moved to the Civic Plaza a few blocks away from Moore Square. The shot below was taken during a car show last summer at the civic plaza.
ourworldIMG_3220
Although I have shopped at the downtown Farmers Market when it was at Moore Square I didn't take any shots inside. I haven't been to it since it moved to the Plaza location since I live close to the Midtown Market and usually if I'm driving to a slightly further away one I go to the State Farmers Market.
You would think I'd have shopped at the downtown Durham,NC Farmers Market since it's behind the parking lot for the company I work for.
ourworldfm2IMG_9696
However, most of the time I get to work from home in Raleigh and when I drive to the Durham office, it's not during the hours of operation for the Durham Farmers Market.

I have taken a lot of shots of the Durham Farmers Market when it's empty because there is a garden there. In addition to the ones I've mentioned there are many other small Farmers Markets within an easy drive for me but with the state one only 15 minutes or so away, and the midtown market 5 minutes away, I don't really need to go to the others.

Farmer’s markets are such a wonderful idea and of increasing interest in my area. Having grown a backyard garden of my own once, I can really appreciate the effort it takes to protect the plants from all the harmful elements. The fruits and vegetables that survive sprout simultaneously and quickly need a home. There is no better place than a market to get low cost fresh food. :)

We get most of our food from the farmers' market although our is quite a little one but we get to know all the stall holders and it becomes like visiting with friends.

You really are well supplied with farmers' markets in your area. I am all for interaction of growers and consumers. I hope they bring their children too to see that not everything comes boxed or in plastic but actually depends on someone growing it.

A great post with splendid photos Carve, thank you.
