Our World Tuesday: Winter walk in the RC Raulston Arboretum

One of the interesting parts of the J. C. Raulston Arboretum at NCSU in Raleigh, NC is the lath house.

On a visit to the arboretum this weekend, I was interested to see that the lath house was undergoing a major renovation and expansion.

The sign saying the garden was closed only referred to the lath house, the rest of the garden was open.

Next to the lath house is the Japanese Garden.

They go together very well visually.

I love the whimsical bathroom house at the arboretum.

It fits into the garden and adds a fun touch.

One reason I wanted to visit the garden on a chilly winter Saturday is because the temperatures were dropping and I knew many of the premature blooms would be damaged over night.

We have had such a strange winter that many plants and flowers got way ahead of themselves.
ourworldpDSCN6106
February has been more like early spring than winter although that is changing again.

I think the bronze tree below looks like an evergolden tree, as opposed to evergreen.

I think the reflection below is almost surreal.

Even if there weren't so many premature blooms, the winter garden has its own beauty.
ourworldsDSCN6186
I think the mix of plants that have overwintered and those that are coming back is very beautiful.
ourworldsfDSCN6188
I suspect that if I went to the garden today, those early blooms will have freezer burn and be dropping off so I'm glad I went when I did.

Fortunately some of the trees and plants didn't get confused and are safely in winter mode.

Love the Japanese garden and the bathhouse (I'm a fan of whimsical -- anywhere!).....and again, I hope for not too much "freezer burn."

Nature seems to be telling us not to rush into things. I am wondering about our early blooms in BC. Although I suspect winter is over for real now, it has snowed here in February. As your pictures show, Japanese gardens add a delicate charm to any arboretum. And the golden tree gives nice color contrast in a setting where winter and coming spring have intertwined.

What a delightful place! I love our Japanese Garden here in Seattle, but it doesn't have such a neat restroom/bathhouse!! Beautiful captures as always, Carver, and such a great tour! Enjoy your week!

The blooms will appear in their natural course. No rush, said the flowers, we will give you a good show this spring!

I was at the Japanese Garden Sunday, and the sakuras just started to sprout but the clouds made the landscape so pretty!

What a beautiful place. Hope the renovations go well and you are all happy with the outcome. I, too, like the whimsical feeling to part of the arboretum. That is especially appealing to me. The Japanese Garden is a beauty. It must be so nice having a place like this close by to go and visit with your camera. genie

That's it! I've got to get there and see these things first-hand. Your photos are tantalizing. Just gorgeous.

Carver, what an interesting place. The lath house is a very interesting concept and design. You sure do have some early bloomers there, I hope they don't suffer too badly for the colder weather.

The Japanese garden is so beautiful!

And what lovely reflections in the windows of that delightful bathroom house!

What a wonderful tour, Carver. I sure hope none of my trees and shrubs think spring has sprung, because it isn't due for a long time yet out here. On the west coast, where my friend Penelope lives, we saw bedding plants blooming in our hometown's flower boxes last February.
It has been a strange winter everywhere this year, for sure.
