The CowParade concept originated in Zurich, Switzerland in 1998 and the following year the concept was brought to Chicago, IL in the U.S.
Cow Parade has become one of the most successful public art events in the world with exhibits held in 75 cities, in 30 countries, on 6 continents since it began.
More than 10,000 local artists in the cities that have participated since its beginning have produced over 5,000 signature cows.
CowParade has raised over 30 million dollars for nonprofit organizations since it began in 1999.
After the NC CowParade is finished showing the cows, they will be auctioned off with the proceeds going the the NC Children's Hospital at UNC. The Cows are currently being shown in a variety of places in Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, NC. I got the information for this post from the NC Cow Parade web site.

These are great. A number of years back there was a cow parade in Richmond, too. I need to find my picture of us in front of one of them. They are so colorful and fun to view. genie

Great fun event. We have one too in in a country town in Victoria.
Didn't know the history of Cow Parade, Carver. This was a great collection of photos, too!
When I lived in Buffalo, they did "Herd About Buffalo," using bison.
Here in Wisconsin, they did one about horses, but I cannot find out why or wherefore... but a couple at our church embellish horse at the coffee shop we all frequent by season. Mardi Gras beads, etc.! Peace, Amy
