ABC Wednesday: F is for Frozen

Most of the snow and freezing rain we had last week has melted but low night time temperatures have refrozen some areas and shaded places still have snow.   For F week I decided to find something frozen to photograph this Monday and I settled on a field which is used for a variety of sports children play. I was surprised by how much of this field was frozen because a near by baseball field only had a little snow around the edges where the sun didn't hit it.

I stepped through the gate to get a better position to take the shot above and I cracked the frozen ice as you can see below. I had my camera around my neck and didn't want to fall on it so I held the fence with one hand and took the picture with the other hand. By the way, a bad fall which would injure me is of even greater concern than my camera but in the past my automatic attempts to protect my camera have resulted in my having worse falls than I would have if that wasn't my first instinct. I don't plan to put my camera above my safety but when it comes to reflexive actions, I find that my camera is what I go for first rather than protecting my own fragile bones.

Intrepid photographer risking her life and limbs (and camera) to get the perfect frozen shot. Be careful out there. It is the perfect shot though.

I can totally understand your wanting to protect your camera despite everything. I'm the same - even with my bad back and recently broken (& still healing) ankle!

I had to smile at the thought of protecting the camera first.
I can remember tripping and falling twice but the first reaction was to make sure my camera was safe. Sore and aching but camera not harmed....

I am not so adventurous as you to get my (also) frozen pics; I looked through my front storm door and opened it to get other shots. I seem to be of the same mind about protecting my camera at all costs. Thankfully, I had no ice inside! :)

I am waiting impatiently for all the ice to go so that I can once again venture forth without my family hovering like mother hens to make sure I don't break anything else!!! It can happen so quickly and unexpectedly...

Oh, my. I know exactly what you mean! I keep meaning to take a walking stick into the forest but forget. Thankfully, there are lots of trees.
You step carefully!

Building the baseball field in a sunny spot shows foresight. Its interesting to watch an icy field and see where the sun hits. I laughed at the camera comment, chasing a heron down a river I've thrown myself under a camera in the past, ouch.

I sometimes have the weirdest reflexive actions like (pardon the pun) stick freezing in place when I should run or get shelter - which may sound like I live in a very dangerous area, but I'm talking about playing with my kid, lol!

Lovely photos, and watch out next time, don't step on thin ice! ;)
